How is Crypto Regulated

Specific characteristics determine whether certain cryptocurrencies are regulated. Bitcoin is not regulated. 

Things like Bitcoin ETFs, crypto trading services, and crypto assets that are securities or derivatives may be regulated by provincial securities regulators if they are marketed or sold to or by Canadians.

Security regulators in Canada have now issued help to assist companies and to set expectations on the types of products and services that may be required regulatory oversight.

The Investment Industry Regulatory Organization of Canada (IIROC) expect crypto asset trading platform to be registered as investment dealers. Guidance has been provided on how to be registered under securities laws.

Crypto trading platforms can register for a time-limited period as a restricted dealer. At the same time, they can work through the process to become investment dealers.
